Just before his parents were about to take him home from the hospital, Adam’s doctor discovered a heart murmur and performed an ultrasound exam. The scan revealed a congenital heart defect known as tetralogy of fallot. This condition involves a hole between the two ventricles, leading to inadequate oxygen in the blood. Adam's parents were devastated by the news, realizing that their son would face challenges from an early age.

Adam, a patient with a congenital heart condition, shares his story

At-a-glance

• At birth, Adam’s doctor heard a heart murmur and performed an ultrasound exam, which revealed a congenital heart defect.

• During a regular check-up early on, Adam’s oxygen saturation was dangerously low. An operating room cancellation led to an immediate admission.

• Adam underwent his first open heart surgery at two months and then another at two years old.

• At 22, Adam has exceeded all expectations and is leading a healthy and fulfilling life as a bike messenger and engineering student.

Throughout Adam's early years, his parents brought him in for regular check-ups to monitor his oxygen levels. One day, they received the alarming news that his oxygen saturation was dangerously low. An opportunity quickly arose for Adam to undergo his first open-heart surgery at just two months old. The experience was heart-wrenching and filled with stress and fear for his parents. However, Adam showed incredible resilience and recovered well from the surgery.

As his son grew older, it became evident that he would need another open-heart surgery around the age of two. This news was difficult for his parents to digest, but they found solace in the fact that the previous surgery had carried him through the first two years of his life. The anticipation and anxiety surrounding the second surgery were immense, but Adam once again proved his strength and came out of it successfully.

Now, at the age of 22, Adam has exceeded all expectations. He is living a fulfilling life as a bike messenger in Boston and pursuing his studies in engineering. His parents couldn't be prouder of his accomplishments and the resilience he has shown throughout his life. Reflecting on Adam’s journey to date, his dad reflects on all the emotions his parents feel when they see Adam thriving despite the obstacles he has faced. They’re both incredibly proud.

From early detection with Philips Ultrasound through to monitoring and successful surgery, Adam's story shows strength of the human spirit and the positive impact medical technologies can have patient care.
